Friction to Flow

On the bridge, not at the wheel

Practical tips for peak performance without burnout

Improve the system, not just the output

Working on the business is as important as working in the business.

It’s like being so busy rowing that you never check if you’re going the right direction. Clarity on what we’re trying to achieve this quarter changes everything. It sharpens decisions, aligns effort, and makes progress visible.

One thing you could do this week to reduce friction and increase flow:

  • Individual’s Tip: Get clear on what your team or business is trying to achieve this quarter. Then ask of each task: does this move us forward, or keep the lights on? Both matter, but spend more time on the work that creates momentum.
  • Team Leader Tip: Make sure everyone on the team can confidently finish the sentence:
    “We’ll know we’ve succeeded this quarter when…”
If that isn’t yet clear, that’s the most important conversation to have.
  • Executive Leader: Translate the strategy into something every employee can connect their work to. Not a poster, but a practical answer to:
“How does what I do today move us forward?”
If people struggle to answer, it’s a sign the strategy needs to be made more real and usable.
