Athletes know this: the workout doesn’t make you stronger, the recovery does. Same with mental work. The break between intense sessions is when your brain consolidates learning and recharges for the next push. The winter holidays can be a good time to change gear.

One thing you could do this week to reduce friction and increase flow:

  • Individual’s Tip: Between intense work sessions or holiday errands, take 10 minutes to do something joyful and different. Walk under the lights, listen to a carol, doodle a snowflake. Don’t check email, that’s not recovery.
  • Team Leader Tip: End your next sprint with a proper cooldown. What worked? What didn’t? What did we learn? Then genuinely rest before the next push. Maybe share gratitude or a festive treat together.
  • Executive Leader: After major projects, mandate recovery time. No new initiatives for a week. Use the time to celebrate wins, reflect, and recharge. Think of it as giving your team the gift of space.
