Teamwork begins by building trust. And the only way to do that is through appropriate vulnerability.

Appropriate vulnerability isn’t weakness; it’s the price of admission to real teamwork. When the leader goes first in admitting mistakes or asking for help, it gives everyone permission to be human.

One thing you could do this week to reduce friction and increase flow:

  • Individual’s Tip: Share one work mistake you feel comfortable sharing, and share what you learned. Going first makes it safe for others to be human, too.
  • Team Leader Tip: Start by sharing your own challenges and how you’ve worked through them, before asking the team to share theirs. Leaders go first in vulnerability.
  • Executive Leader: Normalise sharing failures and what was learnt, in all-hands meetings.
When leaders go first, walls come down.
