Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose.

Most people react instantly to triggers: email lands, they respond, criticism comes, they defend. But there’s always a gap, however tiny, where choice lives. Expanding that gap from milliseconds to seconds changes everything about how you show up.

One thing you could do this week to reduce friction and increase flow:

  • Individual’s Tip: When something stresses you, count to 3 before responding. Just 3 seconds. Use it to choose a better response than your first impulse.
  • Team Leader Tip: In your next heated team discussion, model the pause. Say “Let me think about that for a moment” before responding. Watch others copy you.
  • Executive Leader: Add a 24-hour cooling-off period before any major decision. Sleep on it. You’ll be amazed how many “urgent” decisions weren’t.
